About Weather-Related Models

Weather-Related Models (Pomology Weather Services) was created to provide a simple and efficient way to disseminate timely weather-related tree crop information to California fruit and nut growers, researchers, and industry professionals. The service was made possible through the financial support of several commodity groups, collaboration with the UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Project, the California Department of Water Resources, and the commitment and expertise of UC scientists and staff.

The Fruit & Nut Research and Information Center is grateful for this collaboration and supports and invites their continued involvement to develop and update weather-related models as useful tools in the management of California tree crops.

Harvest Prediction Model

  • Update 2009: Additions to the Harvest Prediction Model included details of the Calculation Methods and discussion of Growing Degree Hours, provided by Theodore DeJong, Ph.D., UCCE Pomologist-AES and Plant Physiologist-AES and Katherine Jarvis-Shean, Graduate Student in Horticulture and Agronomy, both in the UCDavis Department of Plant Sciences
Almond Hull-split Prediction Model (beta testing, Fall 2011)
  • The Almond Hull-split Prediction Model, was developed by Theodore DeJong Ph.D., Professor and CE Pomologist, Department of Plant  Sciences, University of California, Davis
  • Programmed by: Bryon Noel, ANR Communication Services (2011)
Pistachio Bloom Cast (beta testing, Fall 2011)
  • Support: California Pistachio Research Board (2011)
  • This model was developed by Küden, A.B., Kaska, N., Tanriver, E., Tekin, H. and Ak, B.E., all researchers in Turkey. It was compared with a number of other bloom models by Katherine Jarvis-Shean and David da Silva, PhD, both of the UC Davis, using real bloom data provided by Craig Kallsen from the UC Pistachio Breeding Program, and predictions generated with hourly data from CIMIS stations.

Prune Chilling Prediction Model (beta testing, Fall 2009)
  • The Prune Chilling Prediction Model, was developed using the chill calculation methodology of the Dynamic Model, by Franz Niederholzer, Ph.D., UCCE Orchard Systems Farm Advisor, Sutter-Yuba Counties
